The Step-by-Step Process to Building a 3D Printed Home

Is it finally time for you to build your dream home? We know it could seem complicated at first. Luckily, turning your dream into a reality is easy when you work with the right people.

The Mighty Buildings team made this guide to help you build a 3D printed home and show you where to begin. Building a home could take over a year to complete. In that time, you have plenty of decisions to make and lots of careful planning is involved. Here is a step-by-step process for building a 3D printed home to help you carry out your vision.

1. Choosing Your Unit

The first step when building your 3d printed home is to choose your unit. Mighty Buildings is a prefab modular builder with pre-approval at the State level. What does this mean exactly? California’s Department of Housing and Community allows you to carry out your 3D printed home project without additional permission-seeking hassles under the FBH program. We offer a free feasibility study personalized for you to give you realistic options for your needs. There are lots of units and styles to choose from.

2. Schedule a Site Assessment

Your second step in your process to building a 3D printed home is to schedule your site assessment. Put down a $1,000 deposit which will initiate an in-person visit to your site. Here you work with the team and decide which unit is a good fit for your site. You’ll hear all of the information you need to confirm if the project is feasible or not. Budget planning is mapped out along with the planning of your Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The best part is, Mighty Buildings and their partners take on all of the responsibility to make your process less complicated. You get the estimated budget upfront but don’t have to take care of any project management during the building process.

3. Entitlement Service

The entitlement service is where your 3D printed home process starts to get rolling. You sign the contracts for design preparation and handle documentation for future permits on the site. This step in the process generally takes one or two months to complete. You start by signing contracts and paying a retainer fee of $15,000 for a soil report and engineering plans. Your buyer’s contract establishes the roadmap to delivery. Other plans such as the property survey and MEP, structural, and architectural drawings are written for permits.

4. Permitting Process

This is a two to the four-month step where your planning process is almost complete. Your 3d printed home needs to get approved for site-building. All of your permit applications to your local jurisdiction are submitted. You pay the remainder of your Agreed Purchase Price and wait for approval of building and zoning plans. After the plans are approved, fabrication begins!

Legislation in 2020 has made it so any residential property could have an ADU. You’re getting permission on factors such as the space between your ADU and your main house. Zoning requirements like whether your property has historical preservation and proper separation are also determined for approval. Building requirements such as fire safety and parking requirements need permits along with municipal services. As you can see, getting approved for permits does take time. Luckily, Step 2 rids you of any worry because the Mighty Building Team assesses if your property should get approved or not after submission.

5. Delivery

Probably the most exciting part of building your 3D printed home. Delivery should only take about one month to complete and you have to do anything at this point. Mighty Building takes care of the fabrication and all of the onsite work. This includes truck delivery and craning. The assembly and foundation are completed which equals 40% of your Agreed Purchase Price. Mighty Buildings will use Light Stone Material which has several advantages over regular concrete. Your ADU will be resilient and fire-resistant built to last. After the 3D printed home is built, a final inspection is done and you sign your Bill of Sale.

6. Move In and Enjoy

Mighty Buildings ensures that your ADU is durable and built with high quality. Even a single panel of our material could replace up to eight layers of traditional material. That’s why our process is quick when it comes to building. Not to mention, our building process is sustainable. We only print what we need which means we have no waste while your unit is built.

At this point, your new 3D printed home is ready for you. You get to enjoy all of the amazing benefits of having an ADU.

  • Earn passive income by renting it out.
  • Turn it into a guest home.
  • Watch the value of your property appreciate over time.

All of these are your new advantages. If you still have concerns after you move in, we have you covered. Mighty Buildings offers you a 10 year warranty on structural systems and a 1 year warranty on interior finishes.
